Following a retreat in May, the number of consumer bankruptcy filings was higher last month.
Consumers filed 119,768 bankruptcies during June, the American Bankruptcy Institute reported. The findings were based on data from the National Bankruptcy Research Center.
Filings climbed from 114,803 bankruptcies in May.
But activity eased from June 2010, when 126,270 bankruptcies were filed.
During the first six months of 2011, ABI said consumers filed 709,303 bankruptcies, an improvement from 770,117 during the same period last year.
Chapter 13 bankruptcies represented 28 percent of June’s total filings, representing around 33,500 filings. Chapter 13 filings rose from approximately 31,000 a month earlier but slipped from 34,100 a year earlier.
