Americans filed more bankruptcies last month than they did in July. The deterioration hit both commercial and non-commercial filings. But non-commercial bankruptcies have relented from a year ago.
Total bankruptcy filings were 104,336 in August, climbing from 97,104 filings a month prior.
Included in last month’s bankruptcies were 99,417 non-commercial filings.
The American Bankruptcy Institute, which reported the figures, said that non-commercial bankruptcies increased from 92,562 a month earlier.
ABI said it relies on Epiq Systems Inc. for the bankruptcy statistics.
But activity has retreated from August 2011, when 114,471 non-commercial bankruptcies were filed.
During the first eight months of 2012, non-commercial filings totaled 798,080.
