Every mortgage company needs a quarterback who can lead the team to victory — and with football legend Steve Walsh at the helm of their Palm Beach Gardens office in Florida, HomeBanc Mortgage can honestly say they do have one.

Walsh, 37, spent eleven years in pro football earning his place at the University of Miami Athletic Hall of Fame and the Orange Bowl Hall of Fame. This former Cowboys quarterback can be heard during the Florida Atlantic University football games as a color commentator and in commercials for HomeBanc where he manages 19 loan officers.

Walsh, who has a finance degree and began his mortgage industry career after retiring from football, noted similarities between the professions.

“From a (mortgage) managerial standpoint and from a football standpoint, you need to be concerned about your team players,” he explained. “I enjoy that part of the game — the strategy of growing your company.”

It took Walsh 11 years, six football teams, 7, 875 yards, 50 interceptions and 40 touchdowns to earn his place in the two Halls of Fame. But after just one year at HomeBanc, he had acquired both the Rising Star and Top Gun Rookie Sales Awards. Now, with three years under his belt at HomeBanc, Walsh is Assistant Vice President and Sales Manager.

Walsh said HomeBanc has leading marketing alliances with both real estate offices and builders, which could explain why HomeBanc was ranked as the No. 1 mortgage lender referred by real estate agents and brokers in a study by Campbell Communications April of 2004.

“You show the value you can add to your REALTOR’s business by closing loans quickly. You get the referrals. You sell yourself, you sell your business,” Walsh stated. “From a product standpoint we do everything from government loans to jumbo loans. HomeBanc has a stellar reputation in the market place.”

Walsh said HomeBanc is a comprehensive mortgage company that deals mainly with new purchase lending (70%), and it originated $6 billion in loans last year. “We’ve been the number one lender in Atlanta since 1992,” he explained of HomeBanc’s success.

Walsh compared a cheering stadium to one of the many triumphant closings he has attended. “When the people are happy to sell and happy to buy, it’s kinda like your own standing ovation,” he concluded.
