After being convicted of mortgage fraud, a New York homebuilder had a drug overdose in his jail cell.

Robert J. Amico collapsed from a suspected drug overdose after being convicted Thursday of conspiring to defraud dozens of banks out of $58 million in mortgage loans, according to the Associated Press (AP). Also reportedly convicted was Amico’s brother, Richard N. Amico, and each face 10 years to life in prison.

The two, along with their father, Robert A. Amico, Sr., allegedly worked with a group of mortgage brokers to create fraudulent loan packages and dupe appraisers, enabling them to sell their New York residential properties at inflated prices.

A mistrial was declared for the father last month because Doctors found a football-size tumor growing around one of his kidneys, AP said.

Richard Amico, 32, reportedly turned to his wife and calmly said “I love you” when the verdict was read, AP reported, and Robert, 40, asked another sibling to “take care of my wife.”
