The number of government-supported permanent modifications increased more in May than in the previous month. But growth lags far behind a year ago.
At the end of May, 810,443 permanent modifications were active under the Home Affordable Modification Program.
The total grew from 801,538 active modifications in April and 633,459 as of May 31, 2011.
The increase of 8,905 during May was stronger than April’s 6,790 rise. But it was worse than the same month a year earlier, when active HAMPs increased by 24,844.
At 195,345 active permanent modifications, Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. — which is the biggest residential originator in the country — had more HAMPÂ modifications on the books than any other servicer.
Bank of America, N.A., followed with 141,770 HAMPs. After that was 132,632 at JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A.; 57,470 at Ocwen Loan Servicing LLC; and 51,760 at CitiMortgage Inc.
On the basis of growth from the previous month, Ocwen’s increase of 11,314 was the greatest — though the Atlanta-based firm recently took over the servicing for Saxon Mortgage Services Inc. and its roughly 12,243 active modifications.
A distant second was JPMorgan’s 2,872 increase followed by 1,838 at Wells Fargo, 504 at OneWest and 432 at American Home Mortgage Servicing Inc., which now operates as Homeward Residential.
