Mortgage employees in Mecklenburg County, N.C., who have faced their share of layoffs, are getting support from the state — which is helping to fund more than 1,000 new mortgage positions.
Under a five-year agreement with the State of North Carolina, Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America plans to add 1,014 production positions, North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue announced Thursday. The employees, who will originate and process mortgages, are being added at a Mecklenburg County mortgage operation where 100 people are already employed. The deal, partly funded with a $1 million grant from the One North Carolina Fund, calls for the immediate addition of 550 jobs. The nonprofit organization, which is a community and homeownership advocate, is holding a job fair today as part of the recruiting process. The positions will pay an average annual salary of $36,000. Mecklenburg County includes Charlotte, the host city for the headquarters of Bank of America Corp. — which laid off 139 area employees in March. Another 548 layoffs occurred at EquiFirst Corp. in April, while JPMorgan Chase & Co. cut 92 positions in the county on April 4. Another Mecklenburg County company, GoodMortgage.com, is hiring around 40 new employees to help meet strong refinance demand, the Charlotte Observer reported. The company expects to grow from around 60 employees now to approximately 280 within three years. EverBank Financial Corp. — which added 82 mortgage positions in January and February and planned to hire another 113 at the time — is now looking to add another 100 mortgage jobs as a result of increased mortgage activity, the Jacksonville Business Journal reported. In March, mortgage headcount stood at around 900. |
