Chauncey Billups to be Rock Financial spokesman

Michigan’s largest mortgage lender has entered into an exclusive endorsement agreement with one of the Detroit Pistons players suspended over the recent brawl with fans.

Rock Financial announced last week it cut the deal with point guard Chauncey Billups, the MVP of the 2004 NBA Finals.

Not only will Billups be a spokesman for the 2,200-employee company, but he is also a client.

“I’ve gotten to know the people at Rock Financial on a personal level,” Billups said in a press release Nov. 18. “They are more than the team’s sponsor to me, they also helped me buy my home.”

He added that the Livonia, Mich.-based lender “made it possible for thousands of local youth to attend Pistons games and our basketball clinics.”

As part of the agreement, Billups and Rock Financial will participate in various community outreach programs — including giving away more than 7,000 tickets to underserved youth in the Detroit area and appearances at Detroit public schools. Rock Financial will also make a donation to Billup’s basketball camps.

In return, Billups will be featured in traditional marketing elements such as radio and television spots and outdoor advertisements.

The Quicken Loans subsidiary, which was named as one of Fortune Magazine’s latest 100 Best Companies to Work For, has been the presenting sponsor for the Detroit Pistons since the start of the 2003-04 season. Company spokesman Todd Krieger said the terms of Billups endorsement are not being disclosed.

“Chauncey feels strongly that he’s made a permanent home for his family here in Detroit,” Rock Financial executive David Hall said in a press release. “Chauncey approached us seeking to become more involved with local youth organizations and charitable outreach. We’re grateful to have him on our team.”

Rock Financial says it is Michigan’s largest mortgage company, while parent Quicken Loans Inc. says it is the nation’s 17th largest retail mortgage lender, closing $12 billion in loans during 2003.

NBA.com announced Nov. 21 that Billups and three other Pistons players were to receive suspensions for their actions during a brawl that broke out at the Pistons vs. Pacer’s game at the Palace of Auburn Hills in Michigan.

Billups received a one-game suspension for leaving the bench during an on-court altercation.
