A healthy decline was recorded for personal bankruptcy filings last month, bringing to three the number of consecutive months of improvement.

Last month saw 73,816 new filings in federal bankruptcy courts. The total included personal bankruptcies as well as business filings.

Activity tumbled compared to May, when 85,664 filings were made. It was also fewer than the 83,646 filings made in June 2013.

The statistics were reported by the 13,000-member American Bankruptcy Institute.

In the report, ABI Executive Director Samuel J. Gerdano stated, “We expect the decline to continue through the end of 2014.”

During the first-half 2014, the U.S. per-capita rate worked out to 3.09 filings per thousand in population.

Tennessee again had the worst per-capital rate: 6.25. Alabama was next, followed by Georgia, Utah and Illinois.

Consumer bankruptcy filings tumbled to 71,003 in June from the previous month’s 82,474 filings. That brought year-to-date non-commercial bankruptcies to 460,870.

Personal bankruptcies have declined each month since March, when there were 87,932 filings made.

In June 2013, there were 80,160 non-commercial filings.
