The slot left open when the outgoing Consumer Financial Protection Bureau director promoted his chief of staff to lead the agency has been filled by a House staffer.
When Richard Cordray left his position as CFPB director in November 2017 to pursue a gubernatorial run in Ohio, he appointed Leandra English CFPB deputy director.
English, who is currently suing for control of the bureau until a permanent director is confirmed, was promoted from her role as the director’s chief of staff.
On Friday, a statement from Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas), who is the chairman of the
House Financial Services Committee, said that the committee’s staff director, Kirsten Sutton Mork, will take over as the CFPB chief of staff.
According to the statement,
Mork will be departing the committee in the coming weeks.
“As one of my longest-serving and most dedicated aides, Kirsten has been an indispensable advisor to me for the last nine years,” Hensarling said. “Her leadership, deep understanding of financial policy and the legislative process, strength of character, and commitment to conservative principles have been vital to the great victories the committee has achieved for the American people during her tenure here.”
Hensarling noted that Mork started her career in 2006 as finance assistant for the campaign of Peter Roskam (R-Illinois), who subsequently was elected to the House. She has since worked for Hensarling and Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price while he was still in Congress. She was appointed as the Financial Services Committee’s Deputy Staff Director in 2013 and became staff director in 2017.
