Less than a week after a credit union agreed to settle allegations it discriminated against women who are on maternity leave, a California lender has reached a settlement.
Last Wednesday, a $25,000 conciliation agreement announced between Mountain America Credit Union and the Department of Housing and Urban Development resolved allegations of discrimination.
That agreement was on top of more than $2 million in maternity discrimination settlements that have been reached with nearly a dozen other mortgage firms over the past three years.
The companies were accused of violating the Fair Housing Act by denying loans to women on maternity leave.
The latest lender to settle was Greenlight Financial Service, according to HUD.
The Irvine, Calif.-based company allegedly turned down a refinance request from a couple because the wife was on maternity leave.
“HUD’s investigation found that Greenlight Financial Services also allegedly denied four other applicants who were on maternity leave, or delayed their applications until after the women returned to work,” HUD stated in an announcement.
Greenlight sold its origination platform and unfunded loan pipeline to Nationstar Mortgage Holdings Inc. in May 2013 and now operates as GFS Capital Holdings.
As part of the agreement with HUD, Greenlight will pay $20,000 to the couple who filed the complaint and another $7,000 to each of the other four applicants.
